Stony Brook Hockey Concludes Home Schedule, Honors Seniors Serse and Capizzuto

Although the team is waiting for the final AHCA National ranking to be released on Friday to decide their postseason faith, the team finished it's final home games of 2009 in strong fashion.
After defeating Maryland 9-2 on Saturday night, the team followed it up with a 4-0 shutout of Montclair State University on Sunday afternoon.
The team also took the time to honor graduating seniors and team leaders Angelo Serse and Dan Capizzuto.
General Manager Chris Garofalo:
"They're irreplaceable. They played with a lot of heart and fire, something that you can't teach. Something that every coach wishes they had. They gave me 4 good years, if they put that same intensity in their lives they'll be really successful."
Assitant Coach Peter Hall:
"They meant so much to this team. They had two different styles. Angelo's was fiery, hard, fast. Dan's cool and calm. You always need two guys like that on the team."
Defenseman Phil Borner:
"They're great players, great teammates. There's not much more you can ask for out of a teammate. They played their hearts out for four years, I just hope I can do that too, it's an amazing feat."
Goaltender Derek Stevens:
"It's been a fun 3 years. They're two really friends, great people, and great hockey players."
Mrs. Serse and Mrs. Capizzuto:
"We're going to cry. I just think it's a great organization, we've been here every game for the last 4 years, we haven't missed a game. It's very emotional."
"Very good set of boys, they're like brothers. Dan and Ang have been together, I remember the first day they dormed together, they hit it off like brothers and they've been together ever since."
And from the players themselves:
Angelo Serse
"Since freshman year this organization has gotten a lot better, there's a lot bigger fan base, it's getting big right now. Unfortunately I'm leaving at the wrong time. It's been fun. All the guys that came through here and joined me, a bunch of great guys. I'll definitely be back (as a part of the organization.)"
Dan Capizzuto
"I just like to thank everyone, it's been a very positive experience here at Stony Brook. It was fun, and I'm definitely going to miss Stony Brook, it was a great education and great hockey."

Men's Lacrosse Set To Host #1 Virginia

# 1 Virginia Cavaliers (2-0) @ Stony Brook Seawolves (0-0)
Saturday, February 21, 1:00 PM
LaValle Stadium
The Men's Lacrosse team open's their season on Saturday afternoon when they host the University of Virginia. Virginia is ranked #1 in the Nike/inside lacrosse national poll.
The Seawolves will put a young team on the field, returning only six starters, will depend heavily on the continued maturation of two Canadian sophomores, Jordan McBride and Kevin Crowley.
Head Coach Rick Sowell had some interesting comments about the season last week.
On the opening of the season...
“Take one game at a time, with Virginia coming in, their either one or two depending on what poll you look at, and that’s what we have first.”
On the early season schedule ...
“Playing at home, you hope to feed off the energy from the crowd. We play some of these big games early, hopefully the weather will be kind to us.
“We are a team in transition, and having some of those games at home is great, but at the same time, we have to learn how to play on the road too. We really cant let home or road affect us too much. But hopefully we can take advantage of that (crowd energy).”
Thoughts on his team early on...
“So many new faces, getting everyone experiences, we have to play some freshmen. Getting some guys back from injury is going to help the burden. How well we get them acclimated to playing game speed, experiences, playing in tough games and pressure situations, that’s our biggest challenge.
“We don’t have a ton of depth. Our front lines are pretty good, but we’re still working on the depth. We’re one of those teams that if one or two guys get hurt, its really gonna affect us.”

Seawolves Style Makes Them A Serious Contender
The three teams in front of them, Vermont, Binghamton, and Boston University, have all but locked up the top three seeds in the tournament. They are the three highest scoring teams in the league, and use their skill to attempt to run the other teams out of the gym.
But the tough, number one ranked scoring defense of Stony Brook may be the equalizer. As is the fact that the Seawolves were just seconds away from defeating all three of these teams. Stony Brook went to four overtimes with Boston University, missed free throws down the stretch in an overtime loss to Binghamton, and yesterday took conference leading Vermont to overtime on the road.
Vermont, who averages over 77 points per game on the season, was held to 55 in regulation by the Seawolves. Binghamton averages over 70 points per game, and Stony Brook held them to 52 points in regulation. And Boston Univerisity was held to 56 points in regulation, although they average nearly 69 points per game.
Playing these top teams as tough as they have should give the Seawolves confidence that they can do it on a neutral floor. And if Dougher, Martin, or El-Amin catch fire and start draining shots, the Seawolves have a legitimate chance to get to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history.

Men's Hoops Heading To OT in Vermont
Club Hockey: Season On The Line
No one can really guess how the final coaches poll will turn out, but a second win against a Top-5 Iowa St. team would go a long way towards moving the Seawolves up from #18 to the 16th and final spot.
If they don't make it to nationals, the opening five game stretch and last Saturdays loss to D-II William Paterson will undoubtedly be the reasons why.
