Coach Pikiell Signs Extension

According to the official Stony Brook Athletics website, men's head basketball coach Steve Pikiell has signed an extension to coach the team through the 2013-14 season.

"Coach Pikiell has led our men's basketball program with consistency while representing well the values and ideals of Stony Brook University athletics," said Athletic Director Jim Fiore to goseawolves.org. "He is a highly motivated and talented leader, who is building our program with class and integrity for long term success. I couldn't be more excited about the future of Seawolves basketball with Steve at the helm."

Carbon Monoxide Sends Hockey Team Home Early

Instead of playing a consolation game on Sunday at the ACHA National Championships, Newsday first reported the team left Cleveland before playing because of a Carbon Monoxide scare in the rink.

"The carbon monoxide situation was alarming since it's something that was dangerous and an area where none of us had knowledge in," Senior Assistant Captain Dan Capizzuto said via Facebook. "They had the fire dept come to our hotel at midnight and test our oxygen levels to make sure we were all right," he continued.

"As for the game Sunday, it would've been nice to play another game, especially against a team we never played before, but the rink was still not safe to be in so we decided to head back home," he said.

Stony Women's Hoops Falls to Hartford

The Seawolves played the home town Hartford Hawks in the quarterfinals of the America East tournament this evening and fell 68-53. The Seawolves entered the tournament as the #7 seed.

El-Amin gets a decent look from three with a chance to tie the game.  The way the Seawolves played all game they were lucky to get that opportunity.  But there was no repeat of the BU game.  El-Amin's shot was well off and Stony Brook goes home early.

Foul trouble really hurt Stony Brook in the first half. They were forced to play 5 guys who most likely don't practice together. Also, they were a step slow on defense. I wonder if this was because they were exerting so much energy on offense, something they do not do often.

I also think the team is using Danny Carter the wrong way. He should be sitting in the corner waiting for threes, not posting up at center.

The game is underway and Stony Brook is off to a fast start. Marques Cox hit a three to score the first 3 points, and Dallis Joyner went up strong to the basket for a layup and converted on the foul shot.

Fan Support

The Stony Brook fans are out in full force. Almost as many fans as Binghamton, and 1000x more than on the New Hampshire side.

Binghamton Post Game Wrap

Mayben trailed behind his two teammates and coach when entering the media room. He was hobbling and took his time to get to the podium.

Obviously, the first question was, "Hey Tiki, how's your hip?"

"Let me answer that one for him," Coach Broadus cut him off. "He's fine, and he's practicing tomorrow morning at 6am."

Looking back towards Mayben, "Whatever boss says," he deadpanned.

Mayben also said it was a previous injury that he hurt the last time they player Hartford, and he just fell harder this time.

"I'm gonna ice it, stay off my feet tonight, and play tomorrow."

Also from Broadus, which we've been hearing all season.

"That was America East Play at its best - it's a war."

Bing wins 73-65. Malik Alvin leads them with 29 points, including 15-18 from the line. Mayben had 21 and 5 assists. D.J. Rivera had a double double with 12 points, 11 rebounds.

This one's still a 15 point game with 4:45 remaining.  The Stony Brook marching band has assembled at the top of the bleachers on their side of the court.  They basically double the number of band members and fans that Hartford has all by themselves.

It'll be interesting to see how loud they get when game time comes around.

And here comes Willis Reed, I mean Tiki Mayben, running out of the tunnel to play in a blowout.  It's not second guessing if you say it's a bad idea before something happens, right?

Tiki had 19 points with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. He was one of the best players on the court. If he can't go if Binghamton advances it's going to be tough for Bing to replace his production.

Binghamton comes in the heavy favorite in this game, in a matchup of the #1 vs the #9 seed.

Hartford is in this game because of their victory yesterday in the play-in game. They won yesterday behind Jaret von Rosernberg's 21 points-- 18 of them in the second half. He's going to have his hands full guarding any of Binghamton's 3 guards, as they are athletic, quick, and can all shoot, especially D.J. Rivera, who is one of the better players in the conference.

Binghamton has a huge crowd here, taking up 3/4 of their side of the court. As of now, Hartford has no one...literally, no one their student section consists of five Albany kids.

Band/Dance

The Hartford dance team and band are just like their team tonight. Fiesty and a little undermaned.

Playing the popular "da da da da HEY!" arena song, the Bing fans chanted "You Suck!" to the beat. I'm not a music person, but that's embarrassing for the Hawks.

Where are the Stony Brook fans?

That's the question of the hour. Good thing this game isn't starting on time.

Interested Viewers

Maybe it's a red thing, maybe it's because Binghamton doesn't have the cleanest rep, but the Stony marching band is getting ready to unleash, and rooting for Hartford.

A Worthy Competitor

Binghamton's off to a bad start basketball wise, but the dance team showed some heart out there.

Another Factor...

Breaking down the dance teams....

BU, who I have seen live in action up in Boston, has a very attractive dance team, possibly the best looking in the conference.

The UMBC dance squad, while not immediately as attractive, had much more diversity on their squad.

BU gave off the vibe of having a bunch of pretty white girls, while the UMBC squad was filled with girls of all ethnicities. UMBC's team even had to deal with the fact that the audio system broke down during their first routine. But they fought through it and put on a great show.

The BU team also had a more provocative routine, whatever that's worth.

But UMBC realized what they needed to do in the second half to lead their team back. They came out sans shirts.

That was the real key to the game.

The Agony Of Defeat

UMBC-BU Postgame

Daryl Proctor finished the game with 33 points and 11 rebounds, while senior point guard Jay Green controlled the game, dishing out eight assists. Green did not make a field goal but played 45 minutes and only turned the ball over twice.

"It's hard to beat a team three times, especially in overtime. We already knew (we were going to win.)

On the final shot in regulation:

"It was either me or Jay taking that shot. I had the ball in my hands and I just shot it."

On whether or not he thinks about the possibility of this tournament being his final games...

"I just go out there and say, 'This is not going to be my last game.'"

Coach Monroe also brought up the same point that Coach Pikiell has all season long.

"Every game is a dogfight. This was a typical America East game. It's almost like WWE Smackdown on Friday nights.

UMBC-BU

The Retreivers and Terriers played 2 lopsided games earlier this season, but todays America East quarterfinals was an instant classic. UMBC's Proctor took over late and has helped flip the landscape of the America East upside down.

That much anticipated Vermont-BU game tomorrow will now actually be Albany-UMBC.

It's march maddness.

And sets up the fact that if the Seawolves win their games the championship will be at Pritchard next Saturday at 11am.

A clutch fall away jumper by UMBCs Daryl Proctor off a broken play with 2.5 seconds left sends BU and UMBC to overtime. The fans certainly got there moneys worth today.

Well maybe not those Vermont fans who left rather quickly earlier today.

Session 1 Update

A thrilling early afternoon game between number 2 Vermont and number 7 Albany ended with a big upset for the Great Danes.

The late game - Boston University-UMBC - is going down to the wire as well. BU is up 4 with 1:31 remaining in the game.

An update and the going ons between the two sessions will be up shortly.

Day 1 over

We couldn't find the shoot around today, bad communication on our part.

We'll be at SEFCU tomorrow at around 3:00, waiting for the Stony Brook fans to arrive.

Binghamton-Hartford tips off at 6:00pm. Stony Brook-New Hampshire should begin a half-hour after the completion of the first game.

Dougher and Brenton were namedto the all-rookie team, El-Amin was 2nd-team all America East, and Cox was named to the all-defensive team.

Ice Hockey Going To Nationals

The Seawolves club ice hockey team used a strong showing against nationally #3 Iowa State two weekends ago to propel them into the ACHA National Tournament in Ohio beginning March 14.

The final ranking was released on Friday, and the Seawolves found themselves in the #14 spot, up for places from the last ranking.

The Seawolves first game in the tournament is March 14 at 11:30 AM against Delaware.

Stony Brook split a pair of road games with Delaware earlier this season.
